Back injuries are a significant component of strains, which is the second major category of work- related injuries. Although the focus in this section will be on back injuries and their prevention, much of the material covered here will typically apply to any strain or sprain injury whenever it involves the neck, arm, elbow, or any other part of the body that is exposed to physical activities involving reaching, pulling, bending, and lifting. The emphasis will be on the human factors such as stress, health, age and physical conditions and the gradual and cumulative effect of their contribution to a back injury. This section will examine the physiological components of the back; the importance of individual proper diet and exercise; and various administrative controls and techniques that can be implemented to eliminate or mitigate conditions leading to a back injury. |
